$1000 Seltzer Family Digital Media Awards

The deadline is fast arriving!

Thanks to the generosity of Jeff Seltzer W'78 and his wife Annie, the Penn Libraries is proud to offer these digital media project awards. Each award provides up to $1,000 for the purchase of equipment (both hardware and software) and supplies to support a new media project for up to one year. These awards include special consideration for students enrolled in the Huntsman Program. After one year, equipment purchased through the award will return to the Weigle Information Commons for general use. Some examples of technology items that could support new media projects include: digital videocameras, audio recorders, virtual reality camera peripherals, microphones, scanners, mobile devices, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) devices.

Thanks to the generosity of Jeffrey L. Seltzer and Ana L. Seltzer, the Penn Libraries (Weigle Information Commons) is proud to offer undergraduate research awards for up to six students to conduct research using new media and information technologies. Each award will provide about $1,000 worth of equipment (both hardware and software) and supplies to support a research project for up to one year.* These awards include special consideration for students enrolled in the Huntsman Program. After one year, equipment purchased through the award will return to the Weigle Information Commons for general use. Examples of technology items purchased by previous award winners include: video cameras, audio recorders, virtual reality camera peripherals, microphones, scanners, video lighting and mobile devices. Previous winners have created video documentaries, compiled audio interviews, and conducted qualitative research projects.

There Oughta Be a Law!

This video contest asks participants to create a video, 3 minutes or less, describing a new law that should exist or a current law that should be amended. The grand prize is $1000!

It's part of an initiative by the Montgomery Bar Association Community Outreach Committee to promote awareness of the law and to remind citizens of the importance of the law in our society. The contest is for residents of Pennsylvania, and entries are due on October 8, 2009.

The Disposable Film Festival

The Disposable Film Festival was created in 2007 to celebrate the artistic potential of disposable video: short films made on non-professional devices such as one-time use video cameras, cell phones, point and shoot cameras, webcams, computer screen capture software, and other readily available video capture devices.

"Ask Not" Filmmaker Contest

WHYY and ITVS invite you to share your views in a short film on the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the first ever WHYY Filmmaker Contest. The winner will receive a 20" iMac computer. Film submissions must be less than 10:00 minutes.

Short films may be of any genre (music video, interviews, etc) as long as they show a relevancy to an aspect of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS!

What: Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival (GPSFF)

Submission Deadlines: Regular submission ends February 1, 2009. This is about two weeks after school begins. There is no submission fee for regular submission.

Late submission is from February 2nd - February 13, 2009 at 5pm. There is a $10 submission fee.

All submissions must be dropped off or mailed to Cinema Studies Program - 209A Fisher-Bennett Hall - 3340 Walnut Street - Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Anything under 15 minutes that has been made since February 15, 2008 is eligible. All submittants must be registered at a four year college or university in the Philadelphia metropolitan region.

Please make sure to visit www.gpsff.com/submit in order to fill out a submission form and see other relevant submission information.

Why?: This is a chance to get your work seen in front of over 500+ students from around the Philadelphia region in addition to judges who work in the film industry. We also partner with Openfilm.com to distribute your film online and host the film for viewing on our website. Winners receive a trophy engaged with their name.

Film Categories: Drama, Comedy, Documentary, Animation, and Experimental.

Format: Submissions should be Quicktime Movie Files burned onto a data DVD. Please do not encode the DVD.

Halloween Costume Photoshop Contest

It's the most wonderful time of the year... Halloween! What's that you say? You don't have a costume to wear?? Well guess what. You can do it all on Photoshop instead--ask a lab consultant and we'll even show you how. Grab a photo of yourself, open it up in Photoshop, and give yourself a costume, like the ones I did below. Email them to us at vitaledigitalmedialab@gmail.com and we'll judge them and post them in time for Halloween. What's the prize if you win, you ask? The smug sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing you're better than everyone else (but then, you already feel that way, don't you?)
